First passage and sausage in fishmongery
Although a few months ago (hey, even a few weeks ago!) it seemed impossible, yet
we leave Muskegon and head towards the open waters of Lake Michigan. We've heard a lot about it from our friends from the Marina. In our memories still linger stories about treacherous weather, deadly squalls, and rouge waves that sink the reckless sailors. Only Dick kept repeating: "You will get used to the sound of your Atomic Four". So far he has been right. Our brave little engine pushes us forth into the lake - all misty and flat like a mirror. Luckily, the weather forecast turns out to be reliable and soon a gentle breeze pushes us north. We keep an eye on the boat constantly - we don't know her too well and we aren't sure of her performance which makes our sleep uneasy. So far, so good. Slowly we begin to realize that we own a boat which is going to be our home for a year or so, while we wander through exotic lands. It's weird to live our own dreams eventually. There is also a second thought that follows. Suddenly, we became outsiders by our own request choosing a lazy lifestyle on the High Seas instead of hard work for the future generations.
After two days we reach Leland - small pseudo fish town, mostly aiming at naive
tourists and their wallets (you know the guys willing to pay 40 bucks for just a pair of flip-flops). Surprisingly the businesses keep working, but check out the fishmongery (nearest to the port). You can get three kinds of fish: salmon, white fish, and...sausage. Nostalgically, we recall the fish market in Bergen, Norway. In the evening our newly wed friends from Ann Arbor, Ryan and Katka, join us for a few days. Soon we slept like logs. South Manitou Island awaits us.
Funny thing: a plane moored in the marina...That's right, a little hydroplane landed on the water surface, and entered the marina just like that. America...
